A global citizen is someone who understands everybody has rights and is committed to working towards a world where everyone can realise their rights.
Global citizenship in a Rights Respecting School promotes the idea of taking action and building solidarity with people, rather than doing things to or for people.
A particular focus for ensuring that globalisation remains an integral part of the Gold award, a number of schools in the Trust have been working on a joint project. In June, a group of young people from Brownmead and Gossey Lane took part in a collaborative global goals event. Both schools presented their ideas to members of staff and Trust leaders from across the schools and talked about the 17 global goals. They particularly highlighted the issue of poor living standards, poverty, the effects of climate change and a situation where a parent has to decide between heating their home or feeding their children.
The young people were keen to reiterate that all children need to have access to free education, free health care, and a healthy lifestyle. These are the basic rights that every child deserves.
The audience were impressed with how the young people spoke with such confidence and conviction on matters clearly they feel strongly about. They had worked hard on their oracy and presentational skills, ably supported by their teachers.
Well done everyone!
